A study was done  in rural China in 2012, to assess the effect free glasses have on the academic performance of children with myopia.

19 934 grade 4 and 5 learners were given a vision screening test, 24.3% of the learners failed the vision screening and had to undergo an auto-refraction test and subjective refinement.

15.9% of learners were identified with refractive error.

Learners were either given free glasses or a voucher with a prescription to collect free glasses from a nearby hospital. 85% of the learners receiving the voucher did not collect their glasses within 3 weeks of receiving the diagnosis and voucher.

Six months after the start of the study, 41% of the learners in the “free glasses” group were wearing their glasses, compared to 26% in the “voucher” group.

Providing free glasses had an observed effect size of half a semester of additional learning on math test scores.
